Jakarta has been sinking for 2.5m in the past decade. That’s more than twice the global average. Experts say that the $42 billion seawall doesn’t help either, it will only buy ourselves another 30 years before Jakarta is fully submerged. This sinking rate, coupled with the rising sea levels, could put an end to this developing metropolis.
DrowningJKT is an awareness and petition campaign that urge the government to take more significant actions in combatting Jakarta’s urgent land subsidence problem. We want to push the government to think more critically; to provide long lasting solutions for a safe future of the city.
Through this, we also want to educate Jakarta’s citizens about this ongoing issue, to raise awareness and spark initiatives.
Together, we can save our city from an avoidable danger.
The goal is to reach 8000 signatures, at which point the government will be legally required to speak up.
