Emotional Gamut

by Maryland Institute College of Art

The pandemic reminded us that turmoil doesn't just affect our physical bodies but our emotional states too. Emotional Gamut is a project that visualizes the complex interconnections of our emotional experiences. It recognizes and celebrates that our experiences are not made up of emotional binaries but are much more nuanced. Acknowledgement of this complexity might help give our conflicting and contrasting feelings some validity and offer us a richer understanding of ourselves and others. This project makes space in the design world (and outside of it) for self awareness and emotional intelligence so we can be more compassionate and empathetic towards our own and by extension to other's emotional worlds. The project presents visual analogies for the seven primary emotions, each having a palette of colors, unique shapes and typography. The project comes together as a visual system that helps express to express how different emotions overlap and make our emotional experiences rich and layered. Using the tools of graphic design to convey emotion the project turns intangible feelings into a tangible sign system.
