Federico Solmi, the brains behind Federico Salt, is an artist working in Brooklyn, NY. Originally from Bologna, Italy, Federico makes herbed sea salt inspired by the flavored salt his mother made for their family butcher shop. Now mainly shipped to collectors of Federico’s artwork as a thank you, the salt arrives in plastic bags wrapped in tape. When Ellen, EBD’s founder, was one of the lucky recipients, she decided EBD’s design skills could help Federico’s salt reach the artful presentation it deserves. When designing the project, it was crucial to our team to incorporate the personal and rich cultural history behind the product. All fonts, colors, paper, and design details were oriented to a classic Italian look, with small details nodding to Federico's familial history at the butcher shop. Elevated with foil, textured labeling, and small font details, this packaging represents the simple elegance of the product itself. We worked closely with our vendor, Henry & Co. who helped us push the boundaries of such a simple, yet personal design.
