Eau de Toilet with treated sewage water

by Today

Hoogheemraadschap is responsible for water management in the province of North Holland. As such, it protects the country from water, flooding and water shortages, as well as providing clean and healthy surface water. In the Netherlands, each person flushes about 120 litres of wastewater into the sewers every day. What happens to it next is quite extraordinary, with it being purified to such a high standard that the water is eventually clean enough to make perfume. An Eau de Toilet made from purified sewage originally relates how valuable sewage in the Netherlands is. It is a great way to get people thinking about the journey that sewage takes and to show them the steps needed to turn something 'dirty' into a luxurious end product. It makes them aware of the high level of water purification in the Netherlands. It is a 100% natural product, made from purified sewage and developed in conjunction with a perfumer. Plants that grow along river banks, such as red clover, camomile and various grass species determine the scent palette. This scented water consists of concentrated blends of natural oils and extracts. By removing minerals and microbiological contaminants from the purified sewage, it is suitable for making the perfume. In 2021, the Water Board's 1.000 employees were given Eau de Toilet as their end-of-year gift. In the summer of 2022, the product will be on display during the Water Board's open day (in a limited edition of 5.000 units). It shows how valuable purified sewage water is, for example they are already producing green energy in the form of biogas and green natural gas from sewage sludge used for their vehicle fleet.
