In general young adults have a tougher time controlling their impulses and emotions. This can be especially true when it comes to expressing anger. Problems with anger control often manifest into overly aggressive behavior, which can negatively affect the life of the person, and those around them. Providing an effective outlet for managing uncontrollable anger has the potential to reduce the intensity and frequency of conflicts altogether.
Lumi is a social robot that helps people manage their low and high levels of anger. The robot detects the level of anger in a given situation, and responds accordingly by deploying color changing LED lights, emitting unexpected sounds, and provides AI voice assistant technology. By implementing methods used in cognitive behavioral therapy Lumi can recognize the users recurring patterns that trigger anger, and reframe negative thoughts from the situation to identify the positive aspects found within.
Through repeated exposure to the robot's anger escalation techniques, over time the user can recognize their triggers quicker, and develop the ability to efficiently stop the building anger all by themselves. Of course, Lumi will always be there to lend a helping hand whenever the anger becomes too overbearing for the user to handle on their own.
